My Trip to England

Here are the particularly good and interesting pix from my England trip from 6/12/06 to 6/21/06.

Interefting Plaque

Can you see what's weird about it?

Jane Austen Tomb

Actual burial place of Jane Austen

Jane Austen Memorial

Memorial near the tomb

Pieta

Statue of Mary holding the body of Jesus by Eugene Ball

William Walker

A diver who saved the cathedral

The Round Table

King Arthur's round table (well, sort of, since he wasn't a real person...)

Queen Victoria

She is not amused, I'm sure...

Cool doors

These were opposite the Round Table. They just look cool.

Westgate Museum

The old jailhouse in Winchester

View from Jailhouse

The view of Winchester from the jailhouse

Royal Oak

I think the sign speaks for itself. Probably not the only with the same claim, and not terribly impressive inside, but a cool sign anyway.

Piet Mondrian statue

Couldn't find the name of this, but it's cool!

Jane Austen house

Where she died.

Roman Wall

Old roman wall in Winchester

King Aelfred the Great

Statue of the king.

Glastonbury Abbey

Outside the abbey

Glastonbury Abbey

Inside the abbey

King Arthur's Tomb

Well, where it would have been if the abbey hadn't been destroyed and if Arthur really existed...

Glastonbury Abbey

Graveyard in Glastonbury Abbey

This is where the bodies of King Arthur and Guineviere were discovered (well, the bodies they claimed were them...)

Monk at Glastonbury Abbey

He played a monk that escaped from the abbey before it was destroyed. He gave us a history of the abbey that was quite entertaining.

Glastonbury Abbey

There's our tour guide, Alex, towards the right.

Thorn at Glastonbury Abbey

The thorn only blooms once a year. The original was burnt down, but they replaced it later.

Model of Glastonbury Abbey

Reconstruction of what the abbey probably looked like

Another model of Glastonbury Abbey

From the other side.

Cheddar Cave

Where they invented cheddar cheese - really!

Cheddar Cave

Another pic of the cave

Cheddar Man

The oldest skeleton found in England, over 9000 years old. I'm pretty sure we never saw the actual bones.

Ferns in Cheddar Cave

Ferns have been growing in the cave ever since people introduced artificial light. Weird.

Henry!

Okay, this is a silly pic, but I had to post it anyway. I actually own one of these vacuums so I had to take a picture of it from our hotel in Corsham.

Royal Crescent

The Royal Crescent in Bath. Contains 30 houses, although only a couple are still used as houses.

Pulteney Bridge

Pulteney Bridge in Bath, modeled after the Ponte Vecchio in Italy.

Roman Baths

The Roman baths that Bath was named after

Oliver Cromwell's Death Mask

Ruthless ruler of the Commonwealth in the mid-1600s

Bonnie Prince Charles's targe

Well, by tradition it's his targe, anyway

Queen Victoria

Actual photograph of Queen Victoria. I couldn't avoid the glare, but I had to get a picture of it.

Trebuchet

A trebuchet at Warwick Castle

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

Shakespeare's wife's birthplace

Little nook where you could sit and listen to some of Shakespeare's sonnets

Shakespeare's Birthplace

You're not allowed to take pix inside, but here's the outside

Shakespeare's Birthplace

More of the outside

Our group with a guard

This is the only guard who still stands around outside. The others are behind a fence so they can't be messed with like in Austin Powers.

The Guard

This was not easy to get since once one group left, another stepped up almost immediately. Notice the gun is on the other side now.

Buckingham Palace

Just before the changing of the guards. I'll try to post a video of the changing of the guards.

Hard Rock Cafe in London

I never realized the Hard Rock started here. Weird that there would be a tribute to Bo Diddley, who lives in Archer, FL, here in London.

Big Ben

London Eye

Also called the Millenium Wheel. Yes, that's Ms. Stone in the corner there.

Parliament Building

There's Big Ben on the right (well, technically Big Ben is the bell inside, but hey...)

Winston Churchill Statue

In Parliament Square

Saffron Restaurant

I had to eat there, even if it might actually have been called Bridget or possibly even Yolanda (or maybe just Yosaffbridge) (that's a Firefly reference, BTW)

EF Browncoats

Emily, me, and Dale, the EF Browncoats

The Globe Theatre

Kyle, Chris, and Nikki in front of the reconstructed Globe Theatre

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge - not much else to say

HMS Belfast

A naval vessel sitting outside the Tower of London

Tower Bridge

It's a drawbridge! Who knew?

This is where all the arms and armour are in the Tower of London

Ravens at the Tower

If they ever leave, legend says the Tower will fall
